Perhaps the most
awe-inspiring of all of North America’s natural
events occurs during the migration of one of its
most delicate and beautiful creatures, the
monarch butterfly.
The Monarch Butterfly is the king of the insect
world. Amazingly enough, not one butterfly makes
the entire round-trip journey. Winter
butterflies are sluggish and do not reproduce.
In spring they return to summer homes and breed
along the way. Their offspring return to the
starting point.
Yearly between about October and March, some
hundred million monarch butterflies migrate from
the northern climes - some over a distance of up
to almost 3,000 kms., to winter in the mountains
of Michoacan, Mexico.
